Despotiko Island
Despotiko is an uninhabited island today very close to Antiparos Island, there are important indications that Despotiko in prehistoric and ancient times, due to its central location in the Cyclades and the large bay between the island and Antiparos, provided a safe anchorage. The strait that separates Despotiko from Antiparos has a minimum depth of only 1 m. While the islet of Koimitiri is inserted. Due to this extreme shallowness of the strait, there is a possibility that in ancient times these islands were connected. Indications for archaeological finds found at the bottom of the bay of Despotiko, such as box-shaped tombs from the early Bronze Age at a depth of 3 meters. West of the chapel of Panagia in Despotiko, many parallel structures appear. These submerged archeological structures in combination with the altar dedicated to the Home show that the sea level in that area was 3 meters lower. Today Despotiko is approached by tourists during the summer months as an attraction.
